COUGHING COFFIN

Updated: Feb 16, 2021

There have been many methods in the last few months developed to curb the spread of Covid-19 all around the world.

Measures implemented from countrywide lockdowns, social distancing and mask-wearing and even Trump's misguided suggestion of injecting bleach into your body, but East Jakata might have just come up with the most bizarre method yet.

For those who decide that mask-wearing just isn't for them, they could be hit with the naughty corner coffin. That’s right, if you are caught without a mask in public, East Jakata Officials are offering ‘sitting in a coffin and thinking about what you have done' as a viable form of community service.

The idea came about after an excess of people showed up for community service for violating covid-19 restrictions and a new alternative needed to be reached.

In a direct quote from East Jakarta Public Order Agency Head Budhy Novian, he said: “it so happened that officials brought along an open casket coffin. So we asked the violators if they wanted to go into the coffin or wait for community service”. Strange by itself, only more questions can be raised as to why they brought along an open casket coffin in the first place.

Offenders were asked to lay in the coffin and count to 100 while contemplating the severity of their actions because with the pandemic there’s a high chance that coffin might be real for them in the not too distant future, or at least this was the sentiment of officials overseeing the punishment?

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work; and the traditional custodians of all the lands we visit and work with. We recognise their continuing custodianship of the land, waters and culture; and their sovereignty that has never been ceded. We pay respects to Elders - past, present and emerging.

We work to reconcile our history and forge a different future together.
